Firefighters Contain Blaze in La Olympio Abafum, No Casualties Reported

On the evening of Friday, December 19, 2025, firefighters successfully controlled a major fire that broke out in the La Olympio Abafum area, preventing what could have been a large-scale disaster in the densely populated neighborhood.

The fire began around 7:28 p.m. and quickly spread through a cluster of wooden structures, creating thick smoke and raising concerns of further escalation due to the area's cramped layout.

The first responders, led by Assistant Divisional Officer I Matthew Y. Quaye from the Trade Fair Fire Station, arrived to find the fire already fully developed. Access to the scene was complicated by the narrow alleys and makeshift structures typical of the settlement.

Reinforcements were swiftly deployed, with two fire engines from the Military Fire Unit and Parliament Fire Station joining the effort. Their timely intervention helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby residential buildings.

To further minimize the risk, the Electricity Company of Ghana cut power to the area, eliminating the danger posed by exposed electrical lines. Police officers were also present, ensuring that crowds were controlled to allow emergency crews to work efficiently.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), while four single rooms and their contents were destroyed in the blaze, several neighboring homes were saved. Remarkably, no injuries or fatalities were reported, which is especially noteworthy given the 33% increase in fire-related injuries nationwide this year.
