New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Bryan Acheampong has outlined reasons why Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should not be retained as the party’s candidate ahead of the NPP’s internal primaries scheduled for January.
Speaking in an interview on Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, Mr. Acheampong argued that Dr. Bawumia’s handling of economic messaging and leadership accountability during the 2024 general elections weakened his credibility among voters.
According to him, although Dr. Bawumia was introduced as an economic expert, the campaign failed to present a clear and convincing message on how Ghana’s economic challenges would be addressed.
“Bawumia was brought in as a master of the economy, but we did not speak on the economy. Not one clear message to the people on how the country’s economic problems would be fixed,” Acheampong stated.
He acknowledged the existence of global economic pressures but insisted that responsibility for managing Ghana’s economy ultimately rested with the Vice President, given his central role in economic policy.
Acheampong contrasted this with his own background, highlighting his experience in digitalisation and financial systems.
“I have a PhD in Information Systems. I digitalised the Controller and Accountant-General’s systems, banks, and insurance companies. Those are results people can point to,” he said, arguing that leadership must be backed by visible outcomes.
He further criticised what he described as a disconnect between government messaging and the practical needs of citizens, especially at the constituency level.
“One year to fix the chessboard, yet people are asking for basic infrastructure like roads, and we respond with credit scores. That is a misalignment of priorities,” he added.
Mr. Acheampong linked the party’s electoral performance to leadership effectiveness and presented himself as a candidate capable of restoring policy coherence, accountability, and economic credibility within the NPP ahead of future elections.
