New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Bryan Acheampong has questioned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s electoral strength, arguing that the party’s 2024 performance under his leadership raises serious concerns about his chances if presented again as flagbearer.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV, Mr. Acheampong pointed to the NPP’s failure to secure a single presidential constituency seat in seven regions during the 2024 general elections.
“Seven regions, not one constituency. In 2024, we could not win a single constituency in Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, Bono East, and Western North,” he said.
He noted that the outcome was unusual for the party, which has historically seen its presidential candidates outperform parliamentary candidates. According to him, the 2024 elections marked a sharp reversal of that trend.
“In about 99 percent of constituencies, the parliamentary candidates did better than the presidential candidate,” Acheampong stated.
He argued that these results undermine efforts to achieve the party’s long-standing goal of “breaking the eight,” adding that after 16 years of Dr. Bawumia serving as a running mate, the party still recorded only 41 percent of the presidential vote.
According to Acheampong, the electoral figures reflect weaknesses in both campaign strategy and leadership appeal, which could negatively affect the NPP’s prospects in future elections.
Positioning himself as an alternative, he said the party needs a candidate capable of mobilising strong support at both the parliamentary and presidential levels across all regions.
“This is why my popularity is growing,” he said. “You have to go to the grassroots and connect with the base.”
