2027 Elections: Pat Utomi Says He Will Withdraw Support If Peter Obi Accepts Vice-Presidential Role

Political economist and former presidential candidate, Professor Pat Utomi, has stated that he will withdraw his support for Peter Obi if the former Anambra State governor accepts a vice-presidential slot ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Utomi issued the warning during an interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television on Thursday. He stressed that Obi should only contest for the presidency and not accept a subordinate position on any political ticket.

“Peter Obi will contest for the presidency. The day he becomes somebody’s vice president, I will walk away from his corner. I can tell you that for a fact,” Utomi said.

Criticism of Nigeria’s Leadership Structure

Utomi also criticised what he described as the growing trend of elderly politicians dominating Nigeria’s highest executive office. According to him, the presidency should not be treated as a retirement destination.

“Something very important for this election to bear in mind is that the Nigerian presidency has become a retirement home, where people go for the Nigerian state to pay their medical bills. This is not acceptable,” he stated.

Call for Age Limits in Executive Positions

The political economist argued that executive offices require significant physical energy and mental alertness. He therefore called for age limits for positions such as president and governor.

“Nobody over the age of 70 should run for an executive position, whether it is governor or president,” Utomi said.

Role for Older Politicians

Utomi clarified that his comments were not intended to exclude older individuals entirely from public service. He noted that experienced politicians could still serve effectively in legislative roles.

“Yes, people can remain in the legislature until 75 or even close to 80, but Nigerians must not continue to tolerate a situation where the presidency is used to accommodate people who constantly require medical attention,” he added.

Utomi’s remarks come amid shifting political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly following Peter Obi’s recent move to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
