NADMO Officer Sentenced to Prison for Brutalizing 12-Year-Old Stepdaughter – Judge Issues Stern Warning

Techiman, Ghana – A 41-year-old officer with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has been sentenced to four months in prison by the Techiman Circuit Court for physically abusing her 12-year-old stepdaughter.

The convict, Mariama Issah Sulemana, who also works as a caterer and serves as a NADMO zonal coordinator, pleaded guilty with an explanation to the charge of assault. The court, however, found her explanation insufficient and convicted her.

The victim, a first-year student at Nkwaeso Methodist Junior High School in Techiman, sustained injuries to her face, palm, and other parts of her body after Sulemana allegedly attacked her using a car key.

According to police prosecutor Inspector Ofori Yeboah, the abuse came to light when the Techiman Municipal Girls Education Officer, Ellen White Opoku, received a tip-off about the child’s condition. She promptly reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), leading to Sulemana’s arrest on May 24.

Authorities later granted the accused enquiry bail at the time due to her responsibility of caring for a baby.

During the trial, Sulemana admitted to the assault but claimed frustration drove her to act. She alleged the girl had behavioral issues and cited personal struggles, including the prolonged absence of her husband, who she said had traveled abroad.

The presiding judge rejected her defense, stating that no amount of frustration justifies violence against a child. The court initially remanded her in police custody before handing down the four-month prison sentence on Monday.

In delivering his judgment, the judge emphasized that the prison term should serve as a deterrent to all who abuse children. He also noted that Sulemana had not shown genuine remorse for her actions.

The court further ordered that her two stepchildren be handed over to relatives on their father’s side. The welfare of the remaining children in her care has been referred to the Family Tribunal for appropriate arrangements during her imprisonment.

Reacting to the ruling, Techiman Municipal Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, Nana Asantewaa Munufie, praised the court’s decision. She urged parents and guardians to protect children from all forms of abuse.

“The Ghana Education Service, in collaboration with traditional leaders, will continue to ensure that anyone who mistreats children faces the full force of the law,” Munufie added, describing the court’s directives on child protection as necessary and appropriate.
