Knicks Pull Off Stunning Game 1 Heist in San Anto

NBA Finals Game 1: New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs

SAN ANTONIO — Panic never found the New York Knicks, even as Jalen Brunson limped to the locker room late in the first quarter after Spurs forward Harrison Barnes landed on his right knee. Nor did it surface when San Antonio, looking sharper and more explosive, built a 14-point lead in the third quarter.

Perhaps that calm stems from experience. The Knicks have been on a remarkable run, winning every playoff game since dropping Game 3 of the first round in Atlanta — a loss that seemingly awakened a postseason juggernaut.

Brunson shook off a rough start to score 13 of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter, powering the Knicks to a 105-95 victory at Frost Bank Center and stealing home-court advantage. The win marked New York’s 12th consecutive playoff victory, following a now-familiar script: fall behind, claw back, and let Brunson take over.

“Jalen was the MVP in the second half,” said Knicks head coach Mike Brown. “He did what MVP candidates are supposed to do. He carried us home.”

Brown has consistently championed Brunson as an MVP-caliber player, pushing back against this season’s voting results that didn’t place him among the top five — a list that included two-time winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whom the Spurs eliminated in the Western Conference Finals.

For San Antonio, defending Brunson in the fourth quarter proved impossible. The Knicks never looked uncomfortable on the NBA Finals stage.

“I don’t want to say calmness, but we know what we have to do,” Brunson said. “We trust each other and keep chipping away. That’s our mentality.”

Karl-Anthony Towns kept New York afloat early, scoring 10 of his 18 points in the third quarter while occupying Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama. OG Anunoby then ignited the fourth quarter, countering San Antonio’s athleticism. That set the stage for Brunson to find his matchups and work his late-game magic.

The Knicks are no strangers to dramatic comebacks. In the Eastern Conference Finals against Cleveland, they erased a 22-point fourth-quarter deficit. Against Boston last year, they mounted multiple 20-point rallies.

Brunson needed 31 shots to reach 30 points, but that inefficiency will be forgotten amid another signature moment.

“He’s a gamer,” Brown said. “In the biggest moments, he shows up. We said we’d live and die with him, and he got it done — time after time.”

The Knicks head into Game 2 with confidence, despite shooting just 41% from the field and 31% from deep. More critically, they held the Spurs to 2-of-19 shooting from three-point range after halftime.

“It’s a position we don’t want to be in, but it’s a next-play mentality,” Brunson added. “One play wasn’t going to bring us all the way back — so we just kept chipping away.”
