Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary held in the Ayawaso East Constituency on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
With this win, Baba Jamal will represent the NDC in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
According to provisional results from the primary, Baba Jamal secured 431 votes to place first. He was followed by Hajia Amina Adam, who garnered 399 votes, and Mohammed Ramne with 88 votes. Dr Yakubu Azimdow and Najib Sani received 45 votes and one vote respectively.
The primary attracted significant public attention, largely due to discussions surrounding campaign activities and conduct. During the voting process, Baba Jamal’s campaign team distributed items including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates. While sections of the public described the gesture as vote-buying, Baba Jamal rejected the allegation, stating that the items were given as an act of goodwill and not intended to influence delegates.
Ahead of the election, Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, had projected that Baba Jamal would not secure more than 35 percent of the total votes. Based on polling data and voter trends at the time, Dankwah had predicted that Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, would win the primary with an estimated 54 percent of the vote. He also noted that the data suggested a significant gap between the leading contenders, making a late shift in voter preference unlikely.
Baba Jamal’s eventual victory has since generated mixed reactions on social media. While some supporters celebrated the outcome, others expressed concern over allegations of inducement and the broader implications for internal party democracy. Several commentators have called for investigations into the conduct of the primary, while others congratulated Baba Jamal and urged him to focus on uniting the party ahead of the by-election.
The NDC is expected to intensify preparations as the party positions itself for the upcoming by-election in Ayawaso East.
