Bandits Set Ablaze Homes in Anwase Village, Benue State

Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State came under attack on Friday, February 7, 2026, as suspected bandits set fire to at least 11 houses, forcing residents to flee in panic.

Swift intervention by security operatives prevented fatalities, although several villagers sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Attack Sparks Panic, Residents Flee

According to local sources, the attackers arrived around midday and immediately began torching homes, causing widespread fear among residents.

“It happened so quickly,” a resident recounted. “We ran for our lives as the houses went up in flames. Thankfully, security personnel were close by.”

The assailants reportedly retreated after encountering security patrols that had been deployed to Abande community, which had suffered a similar attack earlier in the week that claimed six lives, including that of a mobile police officer.

Security Intervention Forces Retreat

Lawrence Akerigbe, a former councillor in the area, said repeated attacks have left residents traumatised and living in constant fear.

“Anwase has experienced violence before, including a deadly Christmas Day attack in 2024 that killed more than 28 people. Families here remain deeply unsettled,” he said.

Authorities have warned that the recurring attacks across Kwande Local Government Area continue to pose a serious threat to lives and property. Reports indicate that at least 76 people have been killed in the area over the past two years.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as security forces intensify patrols to curb further violence.
