Mahama’s Government Drops Bombshell Reforms: 5-Year Term, 35-Year-Olds Can Run, and a Major Cap on Parliament!

In a move that is set to redefine Ghana’s political landscape, the government has officially accepted sweeping recommendations from the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC). The most eye-catching change? The presidential term is being extended from four to five years. According to the Attorney-General, this gives administrations more time to govern without being eaten up by transition and election preparations .

But that’s just the headline. The government is also slashing the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35, paving the way for a new generation of leaders . To control the cost of governance, Parliament will be capped at 300 members . In a huge win for the diaspora, dual citizens can now contest for Parliament without renouncing their other citizenship . With a referendum looming in 2027, the political temperature is set to boil.
