5-Year Term & 35-Year-Old President? Ghana Drops Political Bombshell

ACCRA – In a move that has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political landscape, the government has officially endorsed a constitutional shake-up that would extend the presidential term from four to five years and slash the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35.

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine dropped the bombshell on Thursday, announcing that the government has accepted key recommendations from the Constitutional Review Committee. The proposed five-year mandate, he argued, would give administrations “a more realistic timeframe” to actually govern—since the current four-year cycle wastes precious months on transitions and electioneering.

But here’s the twist: while the committee wanted the age limit dropped to 30, the government settled on 35—a compromise that opens the door to younger leaders while keeping a measure of maturity. And no, this doesn’t apply to the current occupant of Jubilee House.

The proposal now heads toward a national referendum in 2027, requiring at least 40% voter turnout and 75% approval to pass. Ghana’s political class is bracing for a fight.
