Kennedy Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has officially declared his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position in 2028. His announcement follows a series of events that prompted his withdrawal from the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour.
1. Withdrawal from Party Tour
Agyapong pulled out of the NPP’s nationwide “Thank You” tour, citing concerns over the safety of his supporters. The decision was announced shortly after a disturbing incident during the tour.
2. Stabbing Incident Raises Alarm
A reported stabbing of a student—allegedly by a member of the security team of Ali Suraj, a key party figure—sparked widespread concern. The incident significantly influenced Agyapong’s decision to distance himself from the tour.
3. A Call for Accountability
Questioning the safety of his supporters, Agyapong stated, “If they treat students like this, then what will happen to my boys?” He called for justice for the victim and expressed deep dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation.
4. Stepping Aside for Party Unity
In a move he described as being in the interest of party unity, Agyapong announced that he would step aside and allow Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to continue leading the tour as the party's current flagbearer.
5. Promise of Action
Despite withdrawing, Agyapong assured his supporters that the matter would not be ignored. “I am not leaving this here. I will ensure I deal with the one involved,” he stated, signaling his commitment to seeking accountability.
6. Official Declaration for 2028
Seizing the moment, Agyapong formally announced his candidacy for the 2028 NPP flagbearer race. “I am using this opportunity to announce that I will be contesting because we have built the party for a very long time,” he declared.
7. A Return to the Race
This marks Agyapong’s second bid for the party’s top position. In the 2024 NPP primaries, he was a strong contender, garnering 37.41% of the votes against Dr. Bawumia’s 61.47%.
8. Eyes on 2028
With his grassroots support and assertive leadership style, Agyapong’s renewed ambition sets the stage for a highly competitive race as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections.
