Nigeria’s Super Eagles have officially confirmed their squad numbers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, following approval by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The confirmation comes ahead of Nigeria’s Group C opening match against Tanzania on December 23. Head coach Eric Chelle has named a 28-man squad as the Super Eagles chase a fourth continental title at the tournament, which runs from December 21 to January 18.
The squad is made up of three goalkeepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders, and nine forwards, with all players now assigned their official shirt numbers.
Goalkeepers and leadership roles
Francis Uzoho retains the number one jersey, reflecting his seniority in the team. However, Stanley Nwabali, who impressed since AFCON 2023, is widely expected to begin the tournament as first-choice goalkeeper. He will wear number 23, while Amas Obasogie completes the goalkeeping unit with number 16.
Defence and midfield continuity
There is consistency across the defence and midfield, with captain Wilfred Ndidi keeping the number four shirt. Semi Ajayi remains number six, while Frank Onyeka continues with number eight.
A notable change sees Igho Ogbu assigned number five, previously worn by William Troost-Ekong, who recently retired from international football.
Attackers and key shirt numbers
Victor Osimhen will again lead the attack in the iconic number nine jersey, while Ademola Lookman takes over number seven.
Alex Iwobi has once more declined the number ten shirt, opting to keep number 17. The playmaker’s role will instead be represented by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who wears number ten for the tournament.
Usman Mohammed has been handed number 14, a shirt historically associated with prominent attacking players, while several tournament debutants are identified by higher squad numbers.
Nigeria will also face Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda on December 30 to conclude the group stage, with expectations high for a deep run in the competition.
