Security Agencies Allegedly Seize Vehicles Belonging to Chairman Wontumi’s Wives Amid Legal Battles

Government security agencies have reportedly seized all vehicles belonging to the two wives of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as his legal troubles continue.

The allegation was made by Paul Kwabena Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the NPP, who claimed that the move forms part of efforts to exert pressure on the embattled party chairman in relation to his ongoing court case.

Speaking in an interview on Kasapa FM, Yandoh alleged that Chairman Wontumi’s wives were invited by security agencies and instructed to hand over their vehicles solely because of their marital relationship with him.

“Another issue has come up. Chairman Wontumi has two wives, and all their vehicles have been seized. They were called and made to surrender their cars simply because they are married to him. The challenges seem to be piling up every day,” Yandoh said.

He described the development as intimidation and political harassment, arguing that the actions were unfair and excessive.

Meanwhile, an Accra High Court has scheduled January 12, 2026, for the commencement of Chairman Wontumi’s trial, following the conclusion of a Case Management Conference. The update was shared on social media by legal affairs commentator @AwisiDede.

Chairman Wontumi is facing multiple charges related to alleged illegal mining activities on his Samreboi concession in the Western Region. Prosecutors accuse him of breaching provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995).

The charges include three counts of assigning mineral rights without the required approval, contrary to Sections 14(1) and 99(2)(b) of Act 703, as amended, as well as three additional counts of deliberately facilitating unlicensed mining operations under the same law.

In October 2025, the Office of the Attorney-General filed a six-count charge sheet at the Accra High Court (Criminal Division) against Chairman Wontumi, Kwame Antwi, and Akonta Mining Company Limited.

Separately, Chairman Wontumi’s legal team has also filed an application seeking to unfreeze the bank account of one of his companies based in Jamaica.

Public reactions

The reported seizure of the vehicles has sparked varied reactions on social media. Some users criticised the development, while others viewed it as a consequence of the legal proceedings involving the NPP regional chairman.

As of the time of publication, government security agencies had not issued an official statement confirming or denying the claims.
