A mother in Lagos has triggered a heated online debate after expressing frustration over the amount of homework assigned to her five-year-old child.
In a viral TikTok video, the visibly
parent appealed to the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to intervene, claiming that the daily workload given to her child is overwhelming.According to her, the young pupil receives up to six assignments every day, in addition to project work. She lamented that the academic demands are becoming exhausting not just for the child, but for parents who must supervise and assist with the tasks.
The mother questioned why children who already spend long hours in school—from early morning until afternoon—are still required to complete multiple assignments at home. She argued that the routine leaves them with little time to rest or simply enjoy being children.
Expressing her concerns emotionally, she described the projects as overly demanding for a child so young and wondered what the long-term effects of such pressure might be.
The video quickly gained traction on social media, drawing mixed reactions. While many parents agreed that the workload placed on young children is excessive and could negatively affect their well-being, others defended the practice, saying regular assignments help sharpen young minds and reinforce classroom learning.
Some commenters emphasized the importance of balance, noting that children also need time to play, relax, and develop socially. Others argued that structured academic engagement from an early age builds discipline and intellectual growth.
The debate continues to trend online, highlighting broader concerns about early childhood education, academic pressure, and the need to strike a healthy balance between learning and play.
