Ghana’s largest opposition party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is today holding its presidential primary to elect a new flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
The decision to conduct the flagbearer election two years ahead of the national polls has generated debate within the party, with some senior members expressing concerns about the timing. However, the National Executive Committee (NEC) has maintained that the early election will provide the party with ample time to reconcile internal differences, rebuild unity, and strategically position itself for the next general election.
A total of five aspirants are contesting the flagbearer position. They are Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
Ahead of the primary, the party leadership facilitated the signing of a peace pact by all aspirants. The agreement commits the candidates to conducting themselves peacefully throughout the process, accepting the final outcome, and rallying behind the eventual winner in the interest of party unity.
NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, explained that the pact is intended to ensure transparency, mutual respect, and cohesion within the party. He emphasized that all aspirants are expected to participate fully in the process and work collectively to strengthen the party after the primaries.
Similarly, Chairman of the Party’s Elections Committee, Joe Osei Owusu, underscored the importance of openly accepting the results of the January 31 primary, noting that such commitment would enhance confidence among party members and guarantee a peaceful and credible election.
Voting Process
Approximately 211,849 delegates are expected to cast their votes at 333 polling centers across the country’s 276 constituencies. The Electoral Commission has assured stakeholders of its readiness and has pledged to ensure that the exercise is conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner.
Pre-Election Projections
Ahead of the vote, Global Info Analytics, led by pollster Mussa Dankwa, projected a decisive victory for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, forecasting that he could secure about 57 percent of the total votes cast. According to the poll, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is expected to place second with an estimated 28 percent.
Prophecies and Public Interest
The primary has also attracted significant attention from religious figures, with several self-styled prophets making public pronouncements about the outcome. While some have predicted victory for Dr. Bawumia, others have pointed to Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as the likely winner. Notably, none of the prophecies has focused on the remaining contenders.
Significance for the Party
While today’s primary is a crucial milestone for the NPP, party insiders acknowledge that the period following the election will be even more critical. The outcome is expected to shape the party’s direction, unity, and preparedness as it works toward regaining power in 2028.
The decision taken by delegates today is widely seen as pivotal to the future of the New Patriotic Party.
