A farming settlement in the Offinso Municipality of the Ashanti Region has been left in shock after a violent chain of events ended with two people dead and a traditional ruler hospitalized.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Aburokyire. According to local media reports, a 22-year-old man identified only as Awineme allegedly attacked and killed Osei Kwabena, a caretaker farmer for the chief, in a nearby bush.
After the killing, the suspect reportedly returned to the community covered in blood and openly stated that he had killed the farmer. When the chief, Nana Osei Bonsu, attempted to question him about what had happened, the suspect allegedly turned on him with a machete.
The chief sustained severe injuries and was rushed to St. Patrick Hospital in Offinso. Medical sources reportedly warned that one of his hands may need to be amputated due to the extent of the wounds.
The violence did not stop there. The suspect allegedly tried to attack another resident, prompting angry youths in the area to intervene. A resident said efforts to restrain him failed, and the mob used sticks and other objects to beat him. He died from the injuries he sustained during the attack.
The bodies of both Osei Kwabena and the suspect have been taken to the morgue. Police have launched an investigation into the killings, including the mob action that led to the suspect’s death.
The incident has renewed concerns about mob justice in Ghana, where suspects are sometimes attacked by communities before law enforcement can take over. Residents are mourning the slain farmer while the chief remains in critical condition.
