Accra, Ghana — Ghanaians will observe Monday, September 21, 2026, as a statutory public holiday to mark Founder’s Day, following an official declaration from the Ministry of the Interior.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. According to the ministry, the date should be treated as a public holiday throughout the country, with all public institutions and other organisations expected to observe it accordingly.

The ministry also advised the general public to take note of the date and plan ahead for the holiday.

Founder’s Day is set aside on Ghana’s national calendar to honour the contributions of the country’s founding generation, particularly those who played key roles in the struggle for independence. The observance provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the nation’s history and the sacrifices made by earlier leaders.

Because it is a statutory holiday, government offices, schools, banks, and many private businesses are expected to close or operate on reduced schedules, while essential services may continue as normal.

The Interior Ministry’s statement did not include details of any official ceremonies, but the declaration confirms that September 21 will be observed nationwide as a public holiday.

Members of the public have been encouraged to note the date and observe the holiday in line with the ministry’s directive.
