The Reacher star and his high school sweetheart are ending their 20-year marriage — but they’re doing it on their own terms.
Alan Ritchson, the 43-year-old actor behind Amazon Prime’s Reacher, and his wife Catherine have announced they are ending their marriage after two decades together.
The couple broke the news in a joint Instagram statement posted on Saturday, September 12, 2026. “After twenty years together, Cat and I have decided to end our marriage and continue alongside one another in a different way,” they wrote. “We grew up together. We built a life and a family together. And we are raising three incredible boys who will always be the center of our world”.
The statement emphasized that their bond hasn’t disappeared — it’s simply evolving. “Nothing can diminish what these years have meant to us or the love and respect we will always share,” they added. They described their new chapter as one built on “friendship, grace and a commitment to becoming the strongest co-parents we can be,” while also giving each other “room to grow into the people we are becoming”.
The pair, who share three sons — Calem, Edan, and Amory — made a direct appeal to fans for space. “Change is hard enough without the whole world weighing in,” they wrote. “We hope, especially for the sake of our boys, that you will allow our family to move through this chapter with privacy and compassion”.
A Love Story That Started in a Ballet Studio
Long before Ritchson became a household name as Jack Reacher, he was a 17-year-old kid in a Florida ballet class who spotted a 16-year-old girl across the room. Catherine later recalled the moment in a 2023 podcast interview, saying she turned to a friend and asked about him immediately.
Their teenage romance didn’t last the first time around. The two briefly dated during a summer before going their separate ways, only to reconnect years later when Catherine was studying at the University of Florida and Alan happened to be in Miami for a modeling shoot.
They married in May 2006 and have kept their relationship largely out of the spotlight ever since. For their 19th wedding anniversary in 2025, Ritchson shared a heartfelt video tribute on Instagram, writing: “I’m the luckiest man alive. To be able to build the treasure that is our marriage and family is and always will be the greatest privilege and success of my life”.
Court Records Reveal a Longer Road to This Decision
While the Instagram announcement felt sudden to fans, court documents tell a more complicated story. According to legal filings first reported by TMZ, Ritchson filed for divorce in December 2025, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple briefly reconciled in March 2026 before ultimately deciding to make the separation permanent.
Ritchson’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
What’s Next for the Reacher Star
Professionally, Ritchson is busier than ever. Season 4 of Reacher premiered on Prime Video in August 2026, with its finale set for September 16. A spinoff series titled Neagley, centered on Maria Sten’s character, is also in the works, with Ritchson confirmed for a guest appearance. Amazon has already greenlit a fifth season.
On the big screen, he stars opposite Owen Wilson in Runner, which hit theaters on September 11, and will appear alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the holiday comedy The Man with the Bag, expected later in 2026.
The Bottom Line
In an industry where celebrity splits often turn messy, Ritchson and Catherine are choosing a different path. Their message is clear: the marriage may be over, but the partnership — especially when it comes to their three boys — is not.
