Koforidua-Teacher unions in the Eastern Region have asked their national executives to stand firm in the labor disputes with government over issues affecting the teaching community.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) are on strike over the non-implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, non-placement of promoted teachers on the Ghana Education Service (GES) payroll and non-clearance of Deprived Area Allowance to teachers in the designated deprived areas.
The Eastern Regional Leadership of the unions, however, urged the national executives to hold their ground in the negotiations with government.
They said the teachers’ welfare and working conditions should be the key issue in the talks between the teachers’ unions and government.
Mr. Boadu Anim William, the Eastern Regional Secretary of GNAT, during a press briefing in Koforidua on Friday, October 2, 2020, said the three unions would remain on strike until the concerns of the members have been addressed.
He said in his speech that the teachers’ unions would not allow the employers to walk all over them and the industrial action would continue to affect teaching activities in the region.
The Eastern Region leaders noted that the strike would continue to disrupt the teaching and learning activities of the affected schools unless the concerns of the unions were addressed.
The regional leaders added that they stood behind the national executives and asked members to stand united because the issues were not new.
They said teachers could not continue to wait for the government to take action to address the issues.
The unions have vowed to remain in the industrial action to resolve the impasse.
The Eastern Region leadership has remained firm in its position to leave no stone unturned in resolving the issues.
