Kumasi, Ghana – John Boadu has been elected to the helm of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after a long and winding road to the top, which started with his loss to Justin Frimpong Kodua at the July 2022 General Secretary election.

The former NPP presidential aspirant won the Saturday 3 October national chairman election in a four-man race with 2,888 votes, beating Sammy Crabbe, Paul Afoko, and Boakye Agyarko.

He has now climbed higher than ever before in the ranks of the NPP, having been denied victory in the July 2022 NPP General Secretary election.

A Rising Star in the NPP

John Boadu’s rise to prominence in the NPP started at the grassroots, where he was a Polling Station Chairman, and moved to the Constituency and Regional levels, where he served as Constituency Secretary and Regional Research and Elections Officer before serving in the NPP national executive as National Finance Officer, National Youth Treasurer, National Youth Organiser, Deputy National Communications Director, National Organiser, and General Secretary.

He was the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Liberal Youth between 2003 and 2006.

Mr. Boadu has been at the forefront of many of the party’s successes, notably its campaign for the 2016 general election, which garnered an unprecedented victory, coming in the midst of a debilitating internal crisis. The NPP’s National Chairman, General Secretary, and 2nd Vice Chairman were suspended at the time.

As the party’s Acting General Secretary and Director of National Campaign Operations, Mr. Boadu helped to restore stability and led the charge to victory at the 2016 presidential election. He was subsequently elected General Secretary at the 2018 delegates’ meeting and re-elected at the 2020 presidential election.

Mr. Boadu is credited for having worked tirelessly to improve the institutional capacity of the NPP, with several former bereft constituencies and regions getting permanent offices and the acquisition of IT equipment.

Comeback to the Top Post

Since his loss in the July 2022 General Secretary election, many analysts and well-wishers had assumed that Mr. Boadu would bow out of politics and lay low for a while, but that was not to be.

Reportedly, the former presidential candidate remained in the background, working for the party as a true royal, which paved the way for his victory in the Saturday’s election.

Mr. Boadu is to emerge as a consensus candidate, charged with the responsibility of healing the divisions and preparing a united NPP for the 2028 general election. The new National Chairman-elect has plenty to live up to, considering the massive internal wrangling that has characterised the NPP in recent times, with the presidential aspirancy contest being the worst.

Mr. Boadu has extensive knowledge of the party’s workings due to his thirty-plus-year involvement in its politics at the local, regional, and national levels. Moreover, having tasted both victory and defeat in the just-concluded NPP presidential aspirancy election, he is in the best position to steer the ship through the stormy weather and emerge triumphant.
