Former Real Madrid striker Emmanuel Adebayor has shared a compelling account that highlights Cristiano Ronaldo’s extraordinary dedication to training during their time together at the Spanish giants.
Adebayor joined Real Madrid on loan from Manchester City in January 2011, following a decision by then-head coach José Mourinho to reinforce the club’s attacking options. With Gonzalo Higuaín sidelined by injury and Karim Benzema struggling for consistency, the Togolese forward was brought in as a short-term solution, with an option for a permanent move.
Eager to make a strong impression at his new club, Adebayor was determined to demonstrate professionalism from his very first day. However, what he experienced instead left a lasting impression on him and reinforced Ronaldo’s reputation as one of football’s most dedicated professionals.
Speaking about the experience, Adebayor explained that he had already heard about Ronaldo’s legendary work ethic before arriving in Madrid. Motivated by this knowledge, he decided to report for training significantly earlier than required.
“Training was scheduled to start at 10:30 in the morning, and I was told Cristiano usually arrived around 9:30,” Adebayor recalled. “So I thought to myself, this is my first session, I can’t afford to be late. I decided to get there at around 8:40 or 8:45.”
When Adebayor arrived at the training facility, it appeared empty, leading him to believe he was the first player on site. Confident that his early arrival would be noticed, he was pleased with his effort—until he heard activity coming from another part of the complex.
Curious, he asked a physiotherapist what was going on, only to be told that Ronaldo was already training.
“They said, ‘Oh, Ronaldo is swimming already,’” Adebayor recounted with a laugh. “I went to greet him and asked what time he arrived. He said, ‘7:30.’”
The revelation left Adebayor astonished. While official training began at 10:30, Ronaldo had arrived three hours earlier to begin his personal preparation. According to Adebayor, that level of commitment explained much of the Portuguese star’s sustained excellence at the highest level.
“Now, even at 40, he’s still competing at the top,” Adebayor added. “It’s beautiful to watch.”
Ronaldo’s dedication continues to yield results. In 2023, he scored 43 goals and registered seven assists in 51 appearances for Al Nassr and the Portugal national team, underlining that discipline and hard work remain central to his success.
Looking ahead, Ronaldo is set to feature for Al Nassr as they continue their domestic campaign, with crucial league fixtures aimed at closing the gap on title rivals Al Hilal and Al Ittihad.
Adebayor’s story serves as yet another testament to the mindset that has defined Cristiano Ronaldo’s illustrious career—one built on consistency, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
