A Nigerian prison officer has ignited widespread discussion on social media after offering controversial advice to married women on how to respond to infidelity in marriage.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the officer argued that men are generally unwilling to forgive unfaithfulness from their wives and, as such, women should adopt the same stance when their husbands cheat. According to him, forgiveness in such situations often favors men and disadvantages women.
He wrote:
“Married women, listen to me.
Men will not forgive you if you cheat.
So when he cheats, don’t forgive him.
Leave him. Pack your bags and leave his house.
Even if you later become a single mother and eventually date a married man, at least you would have taught him a lesson he will never forget by walking away from a cheating marriage.
Am I making sense?”
The post quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from social media users, with opinions sharply divided.
Public Reactions
Some users supported the officer’s stance, while others criticized it as unrealistic and potentially harmful.
One user, Obaloluwa, cautioned against following such advice, suggesting that many women would rather endure infidelity than leave a marriage. New Dawn questioned whether leaving would simply encourage women to become involved with other married men.
Others took a more defiant tone. Charlene remarked that she would rather cheat before leaving a marriage, while Henry Drake criticized the advice as irresponsible, arguing that leaving a stable home solely to “teach a lesson” ignores the long-term consequences.
Adeyinka acknowledged that leaving might be the ideal option but noted that many women instead choose to retaliate through infidelity, which he claimed often ends badly for them. Meanwhile, Amalii expressed frustration over the constant focus on cheating, calling for more positive conversations about marriage.
The debate reflects ongoing societal tensions around marriage, forgiveness, gender expectations, and how couples should navigate betrayal. As with many viral opinions, the post has left the public deeply divided, highlighting that responses to infidelity remain complex and deeply personal.
