Woman Sparks Debate After Criticising “Glamourisation” of Single Motherhood

A viral video circulating on social media has triggered widespread debate after a woman openly criticised what she described as the growing “glamourisation of single motherhood” among young African women.

In the video, the 29-year-old woman was reacting to an earlier clip featuring a 24-year-old single mother of two who reportedly described motherhood as “wonderful.” The critic argued that such portrayals often ignore the long-term emotional and financial challenges associated with unplanned pregnancies.

“Stop Making Children Pay for Poor Choices”

According to the woman, discussions around single motherhood are frequently treated as taboo in many African societies, with dissenting voices quickly labelled immoral or accused of attacking cultural values.

She stated that one of her proudest personal decisions was choosing not to have children with past partners, despite being in relationships she described as positive at the time. She explained that her stance was influenced by the belief that poor partner choices can lead to single parenthood and prolonged hardship, particularly for children.

The woman further questioned narratives that present motherhood as the ultimate fulfilment for young women, arguing that many are encouraged to embrace it without considering personal growth, independence, or life experiences.

She cited travel, education, and self-development as opportunities she believes many young mothers may miss, referencing destinations such as Bali, Italy, Cape Town, and the Maldives as examples of experiences she values.

“I Won’t Have Children Outside Marriage”

Concluding her remarks, the woman stated that she would only have children within marriage, insisting that children should not suffer the consequences of what she described as poor judgment in choosing partners.

Her comments have since divided public opinion online, with some supporting her emphasis on responsibility and planning, while others argue that her remarks unfairly stigmatise single mothers and overlook complex social realities.
