A New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications director has slammed the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for “backward politics” after their deputy general secretary accused the first vice chairman of NPP, Kojo Fosu Boadu (Kojo Bamba), of using “macho politics” for the position.

Mustapha Gbande, NDC’s deputy general secretary, accused Bamba of “backward politics” for the position. He claimed that it will “project a certain type of violence that Ghana is no longer used to”, and that the NDC “had bypassed that in 2016”.

Speaking on Joynews’ The Pulse, Miracles Aboagye, NPP’s communications director, took up for Bamba and accused Gbande of hypocrisy and questioned his credentials as a politician.

“I immediately turned my face to my party and I said ‘okay he is looking down on my First Vice Chairman, how and why I don’t know’. But let me look at him. He is a Deputy General Secretary of the NDC. Would he be a Deputy General Secretary in my NPP?” Aboagye said.

“I don’t think he would ever win any election in the NPP”.

According to Aboagye, Bamba has the “intellectual capacity”, the “creativity”, and the “organisational skills” to make it to the top of the opposition party.

“Respectfully Mustapha, respectfully, respectfully, Bamba could be a chairman in the NDC any day, any time, without competition because of his level of intelligence, his level of innovation, his level of creativity, chairman Bamba would easily be a chairman of the NDC”.

“Election Outcome Shows That He Has What It Takes To Win”

Aboagye praised the outcome of the election that propelled Bamba to the position, saying it was a clear demonstration that he had the necessary qualities to lead.

Bamba, according to the NPP communications director, got a whooping 3,116 votes to win the position. He defeated 13 other aspirants vying for three vice chairmanship positions. Henry Nana (Nana B) got 3,061 votes to win position number 2 while Nana Akomea got 2,987 votes.

Aboagye said the massive electoral success was a testament to Bamba’s ability to mobilise people.

“There you have somebody who runs an election that has about 7,100 delegates and beats 13 people and becomes first, you think you are better than him?”

According to Aboagye, Bamba has the charisma and the influence needed to mobilise the youth and grassroots in the run-up to the 2028 elections. Calling him an “influential, innovative and forward-thinking politician”, the NPP communications director said his victory was a sign that the party wanted people from different backgrounds and with different outlooks.

“He will help us protect the ballots of the NPP. The votes of the NPP will be protected. The ballots of the NPP will be protected,” Aboagye said.

“We Cannot Say ‘Not This Man’, Not Because He Is Poor”

Aboagye accused the NDC of trying to drive a wedge between poor Ghanaians and the political process by throwing the poor against rich politicians.

Francis-Xavier Sosu, member of parliament for Asu, is a shining example of a poor but talented Ghanian who made it despite the odds. The NPP communications director said they would always open doors for people like Sosu, talented and hardworking Ghanaians who made it from the slums and back alleys of Ghana.

Calling for an end to the politics of “elitism and exclusion”, he said ordinary Ghanaians such as the market women, the artisans, and the youths, in the slums and rural areas were observing and analysing the NDC’s attacks on Bamba and would not be long before they passed judgment.

Aboagye said the NDC must understand that the victory of Bamba was a huge vote of confidence in him as a politician and that he had good leadership skills.

“He will make us win. We can’t say ‘not this man’ not because he is poor,” Aboagye said.

The Debate Around The NPP’s New Leadership

Bamba’s meteoric rise from the leader of the Delta Force – a private security agency that had a violent confrontation with the Kumasi Regional Coordinating Council in 2017 over a security detail appointment – to the first vice chairman of the NPP has sparked a political firestorm.

Critics say it is a sign that the party is veering towards “macho” politics. Some say it reveals a lot about the kind of politics NPP is getting into.

The NDC has said that appointing such a person would be detrimental to them and the Ghanaian people. But it seems the NDC’s misgivings about the NPP’s choice of man, and the kind of politics it will espouse in future, is a non-starter as far as the NPP is concerned.

With the appointment of John Boadu as national chairman and the rest of the national officers, it is safe to assume that the NPP is gearing up for a fight in the lead up to the 2028 elections.

At least for now, Miracles Aboagye, NPP’s communications director, has taken up for Kojo Bamba against the NDC’s allegations and thrown his considerable weight behind him.
