In his second legal incident today, a charge of GH¢15 million defamation brought by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against the Ghana Gold Board CEO Sammy Gyamfi was struck out in the Accra High Court today, October 14.
The case was struck out by the court, General Jurisdiction 1, on the grounds that the writ of summons was “incurably defective and incompetent,” and does not comply with the mandatory provisions of Order 57 Rule 2 of C.I. 47, which deals with the rules for libel actions.
The court’s decision to strike out the case was a procedural dismissal, which did not decide on the substance of the case, that is, whether or not the statements were defamatory.
The controversy began in August 2026 after strongly worded exchanges on the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. Afenyo-Markin had asked for answers concerning a reported US$1.7 billion loss and openly called for an inquiry into the matter. During an interview with the JoyNews Newsfile on August 22, Sammy Gyamfi accused the minority leader of being an ‘extortionist.’
Alexander Afenyo-Markin later took to X to comment on the news of the case being struck out, writing, “The Mills of Justice grind slowly but with” , which was met with derision by many netizens. A popular Twitter user, Charles, mocked him writing, “Grind slowly???? You made paneling within a few hours during your time, ooo honorable”.
Adomonline reported that Afenyo-Markin would continue the defamation case, which implies that the political war between the two parties will continue to play out in the court.
