Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticized President John Dramani Mahama for his decision to terminate the employment of Ghanaians who were legitimately hired into the public sector. The directive, issued by the Chief of Staff, calls for the dismissal of individuals employed after December 7, 2024. However, reports indicate that some organizations have dismissed employees whose appointments date back to November 2024.
Speaking in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin expressed his concerns while seconding the Majority Leader’s motion to adjourn the house following the President’s address. The Effutu Member of Parliament (MP) voiced his apprehension over the decision to dismiss workers after less than 100 days in office, highlighting the negative impact this could have on the youth.
Afenyo-Markin pointed out that the youth now associate President Mahama’s name with mass layoffs and job terminations. "In less than 100 days of his administration, the only approach we see is to sack and dismiss workers. Mr. Speaker, the youth on the streets of Accra today are saying 'Mahama baako, termination bebree,'" he remarked, emphasizing the growing frustration among the nation's young workforce.
