ASEM ABA: Liverpool Manager Arne Slot and Assistant Sipke Hulshoff Sanctioned by FA for Improper Conduct
Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff have each been handed a two-match touchline ban and fined by the English Football Association (FA) for “improper behaviour” following the Merseyside derby draw against Everton.
The incident occurred after the controversial 2-2 draw between the two clubs two weeks ago, where Slot was seen in a heated exchange with referee Michael Oliver. Both Slot and Hulshoff were charged with acting “in an improper manner and/or using insulting and/or abusive words or behaviour” towards the officials after the final whistle.
In addition to the two-match suspension, which will begin with Liverpool’s upcoming home match against Newcastle United on Wednesday and end with their fixture against Southampton on March 8, Slot has been fined £70,000. The club itself, Liverpool, was also fined £50,000 for failing to control its staff. Everton, who faced the same charge, was fined £65,000.
A statement released by the FA on Wednesday morning reads: "An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Everton, Liverpool, Arne Slot, and Sipke Hulshoff following the Premier League match between the clubs on February 12.
"It was alleged that both clubs failed to ensure that their players and/or technical area occupants behaved in a proper and non-provocative manner following the final whistle. Both Everton and Liverpool admitted the charges, resulting in fines of £65,000 and £50,000, respectively.
"It was further alleged that Arne Slot acted improperly and used insulting and/or abusive language towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after the final whistle. Slot admitted the charge, resulting in a two-match touchline suspension and a £70,000 fine.
"It was also alleged that assistant manager Sipke Hulshoff behaved improperly towards a match official, leading to his dismissal. After being sent off, he continued to act in an improper manner and used abusive language towards the officials. Hulshoff admitted the charge and received a two-match touchline ban and a £7,000 fine."
The Regulatory Commission’s detailed reasoning for these sanctions will be published in due course.
