Assault in Custody Sparks Probe: Interior Minister Orders Full Investigation Into Police Breach

Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak demands accountability after detained pastor is attacked by civilian at police headquarters

In a swift response to a shocking security breach, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to launch an immediate investigation into how an arrested individual was assaulted while in police custody.

The minister has demanded a thorough inquiry to determine how civilians gained unauthorized access to the detained suspect, as well as to identify any police officers who may have facilitated, permitted, or negligently overlooked the security lapse.

Key directives issued by the minister include:

· Disciplinary proceedings against any police officers found culpable following the investigation

· Immediate arrest and interrogation of all civilians involved in the assault, in strict accordance with the law

· Questioning of supervising officers directly responsible for the custody and supervision of the detained individual

· Impartial enforcement of the law against all persons connected to the incident, without fear or favor

Incident Sparks Public Outcry

The investigation comes after a viral video showed a civilian slapping a detained suspect while he was handcuffed at the Ghana Police Service headquarters. The suspect, a pastor, had been arrested on allegations of insulting Prophet Muhammad—a charge that had already drawn significant public attention.

The footage ignited widespread public debate and calls for accountability, raising serious questions about the security protocols at one of the nation's most prominent law enforcement facilities.

Accountability at the Forefront

The minister's directives aim to establish clear accountability and ensure that both civilians and police officers found to have violated the law face appropriate sanctions. The development underscores the government's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the justice system and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their circumstances, are protected while in state custody.
