The University Hospital at the University of Ghana has been compelled to scale down critical medical services following the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).
In an official notice released Wednesday, August 12, the hospital announced the indefinite suspension of its General Outpatient Department (OPD), specialist clinics, and pharmacy counselling services, effective Thursday, August 13.
The disruption stems directly from the industrial action, which has paralysed administrative functions across public universities, severely hampering the hospital's operational capacity.
Emergency Services Maintained
In a reassuring move for patients requiring urgent care, the hospital has confirmed that its Emergency Department remains fully operational. Individuals in need of immediate medical attention will continue to receive treatment without interruption.
The Root of the Dispute
The GAUA strike is driven by longstanding grievances over the implementation of the association's conditions of service and broader welfare concerns affecting university administrators across Ghana.
The association has repeatedly called on relevant authorities—including the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ministry of Education—to address these demands, but progress has remained elusive, prompting the current industrial action.
