A 32-year-old junior pastor has been handed a decade-long prison sentence after conning a teacher out of thousands of dollars with promises of a teaching position in Malaysia.
Stephen Yaw Gyamfi, a junior pastor at Blessed Gate Worship Centre in Mim, Ahafo Region, was convicted by the Nsuta Circuit Court after pleading guilty to fraud charges.
The victim, 41-year-old Abigail Darkwah, a teacher at Onwe M/A 2 Junior High School near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, was introduced to Gyamfi in January 2025 through a colleague who claimed the pastor had valuable connections for securing teaching jobs abroad.
Trusting the referral, Darkwah engaged Gyamfi about the opportunity. The pastor allegedly demanded $4,300 (approximately GH₵73,100 at the time), claiming the funds were necessary for visa processing and airline ticket arrangements.
After receiving payment, Gyamfi reportedly became unresponsive and failed to deliver on his promises. The teacher, realizing she had been deceived, promptly reported the matter to authorities, leading to the pastor's arrest and prosecution.
During court proceedings, Gyamfi admitted guilt to the charges. The Nsuta Circuit Court subsequently convicted and sentenced him to 10 years' imprisonment, bringing the case to a close.
