Authorities in Ghana have launched a major crackdown on a controversial street drink known as Sukudai after laboratory tests revealed it may pose serious health risks to consumers.
Investigations by the Department of Pharmacology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) found that the herbal cocktail—popularly called “Madara Sukudai”—contains dangerous chemical substances that could damage vital organs.
The drink, widely sold in Zongo communities and around mechanic workshops in Kumasi, is often promoted as a “heart cleanser,” particularly among young people. However, preliminary toxicology tests have raised serious concerns.
According to researchers at KNUST, the concoction contains acetone, zinc chloride, and ethanol—chemicals commonly used in industrial and chemical processes. In controlled laboratory experiments, rats given low, medium, and high doses of the mixture all died within 24 hours.

Researchers also observed extreme reactions from the substance. Samples placed in plastic containers reportedly melted the material, highlighting its corrosive properties.
Head of the Pharmacology Department, Cynthia Amaning Danquah, warned that ingesting such chemicals can cause severe gastrointestinal irritation and potentially lead to kidney and liver damage.
Medical experts at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have also expressed concern, noting that patients sometimes arrive with unexplained kidney complications that may be linked to unknown substances.
While further studies are underway, authorities and health experts are urging the public to avoid consuming Sukudai as investigations continue into the potentially dangerous cocktail.
