HOUSTON — The chants of Dominican fans at LoanDepot Park in Miami didn’t lie: “Queremos a USA” — they wanted the United States, and they got it.

Team USA advanced to the World Baseball Classic semifinals with a thrilling 5-3 win over Canada Friday night, setting the stage for a blockbuster clash with the Dominican Republic, one of the tournament’s most explosive lineups.

πŸ’₯ Big Names, High Stakes

National League Cy Young winner Paul Skenes will start for Team USA against the Dominican Republic’s powerhouse hitters. On the mound for the D.R., expect Athletics right-hander Luis Severino, ready to challenge a U.S. lineup that has plenty of star power but has struggled to find consistent production so far.

“I expect it to be one of the best games of all time,” said Team USA manager Mark DeRosa, previewing Sunday’s 8 p.m. ET showdown in Miami — the first WBC meeting between these two teams since 2017. Back then, the U.S. eliminated the Dominican Republic en route to its only WBC title.

How the USA Won

The game was tense against Canada, a team that hadn’t beaten the U.S. in WBC play since 2006. At Daikin Park, 38,054 fans witnessed the U.S. take an early lead:

1st inning: Run-scoring groundout by Kyle Schwarber.

3rd inning: A throwing error by Canada’s Abraham Toro with bases loaded allowed Josh Naylor to score two more runs.

6th inning: Brice Turang and Pete Crow-Armstrong added RBI singles to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Logan Webb, the U.S. starter, pitched 4⅔ shutout innings, holding Canada to four hits while striking out five. Relief pitchers Brad Keller and Gabe Speier allowed three Canadian runs, but David Bednar, Garrett Whitlock, and Mason Miller closed the game to secure the 5-3 victory.

Offense Challenges Continue

Team USA’s bats have struggled at times in the WBC, putting up 24 runs in the first two games but faltering against Mexico, Italy, and Canada.

“If we’re going to win this tournament, like we all believe we’re going to, it’s going to take more than home runs,” said Aaron Judge. “We’ve got to play small ball, move runners, and create offense in different ways.”

Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic has been nearly unstoppable, batting .312/.453/.637 as a team with 14 home runs, tied for the most by any team in WBC history.

Bryce Harper summed it up: “One through nine of that lineup, they can all go deep. One of the best countries in the world for baseball, and they’re proving it.”
