U.S. law enforcement agencies have been alerted to a potential security threat after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) warned that Iran had allegedly considered launching a drone attack against targets in California. The warning, detailed in a security bulletin reviewed by ABC News, was circulated to police departments across the state in late February.
According to the alert, intelligence obtained by federal authorities indicated that as of early February 2026, Iran may have aspired to carry out a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The drones were reportedly intended to be launched from an unidentified vessel positioned off the U.S. West Coast, potentially targeting locations within California.
The bulletin stated that the suspected plan was tied to a possible retaliation scenario. Specifically, the attack could have been executed if the United States conducted military strikes against Iran. However, the warning emphasized that authorities did not have further information regarding the timing, exact targets, methods, or individuals involved.
The alert emerged during a period of heightened geopolitical tensions. The administration of Donald Trump recently initiated military operations against the Islamic Republic, while Iran has reportedly responded with drone attacks on various targets across the Middle East. Despite the seriousness of the warning, a senior U.S. law enforcement official indicated that the recent 12-day bombardment by U.S. and Israeli forces is believed to have significantly weakened Iran’s operational capabilities, potentially limiting its ability to carry out such an attack.
Officials from the FBI’s Los Angeles field office declined to comment publicly on the intelligence report. Meanwhile, the White House has not issued an immediate response.
State authorities in California say precautionary measures are already underway. A spokesperson for the office of Gavin Newsom confirmed that the state’s emergency management teams are actively coordinating with federal and local security agencies to strengthen protections for communities.
Local law enforcement agencies have also heightened readiness. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department stated that it has increased patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions, and other high-profile locations. Officials emphasized that these measures are being taken out of an abundance of caution in response to current global developments.

Security experts are also monitoring other potential drone-related threats. Intelligence officials have previously raised concerns about the expanding use of drones by Mexican drug cartels, which could pose risks to U.S. law enforcement and military personnel near the southern border.
Former Department of Homeland Security intelligence chief and ABC News contributor John Cohen warned that the growing accessibility of drone technology makes such threats increasingly plausible. He noted that intelligence sharing between federal, state, and local agencies is essential to preparing for and preventing potential attacks.
Authorities stress that the FBI’s warning is precautionary but underscores the evolving nature of modern security threats, particularly as drone technology becomes more widely available and increasingly used in global conflicts.
