Top US Counterterrorism Official Quits, Slams Iran War and Trump Policies

In a bold move that has shaken Washington, Joseph “Joe” Kent, the Trump administration’s senior counterterrorism official, announced his resignation, citing his opposition to the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Posting a letter on his X account, Kent stated that Iran posed “no imminent threat” to the United States and accused the administration of being influenced by “pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.”

Kent, 45, is a decorated former US special forces and CIA officer. He endured personal tragedy when his wife, Navy cryptologic technician Shannon Kent, was killed in a suicide attack in Syria in 2019. Drawing on his experience, Kent emphasized that he could not support a war that “serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.”

In his letter, Kent also criticized misinformation spread by high-ranking Israeli officials and prominent US journalists, claiming it misled Trump into abandoning his “America First” agenda. Despite being a long-time Trump supporter who previously ran unsuccessfully for Congress, Kent stated he could no longer back policies that send young Americans into “unnecessary wars.”

Kent’s resignation marks the most prominent public rebuke of the US-Israeli operation in Iran within the administration. During his tenure at the National Counterterrorism Center, Kent reported directly to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, overseeing global terrorist threat detection. He previously deployed 11 times with US Army special forces and served as a paramilitary officer for the CIA.
