Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has sharply criticised U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing his administration of promoting policies that undermine and erase Black history and cultural education.
Speaking during his visit to New York, Mahama warned that recent developments in the United States risk setting a dangerous global precedent. He argued that actions targeting educational and cultural institutions are gradually normalising the suppression of historical truths related to slavery, segregation, and racism.
Mahama highlighted concerns that Black history courses are being removed from school curricula, while institutions face pressure to avoid teaching what he described as the “full truth” of America’s past. He also pointed to an increase in the banning of books addressing racial injustice, calling these trends deeply troubling.
This is not the first time Mahama has spoken out against Trump. He previously condemned remarks by the U.S. president alleging a so-called “white genocide” in South Africa, describing such claims as false and offensive to Africans. Mahama further criticised Trump’s past confrontation with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, calling it unfounded and disrespectful.

Meanwhile, Mahama is in New York to present a significant resolution at the United Nations General Assembly. The proposal seeks to formally recognise the transatlantic slave trade as the gravest crime in human history and to advance calls for reparations. The initiative has received backing from the African Union and Caribbean nations, though opposition is expected from the United States and European Union.
In a separate development, Lincoln University withdrew plans to award Mahama an honorary doctorate, citing concerns related to Ghana’s controversial anti-LGBTQ legislation.
Mahama’s remarks have reignited global discussions on race, history, and accountability, placing renewed focus on how nations confront their past and shape their future.
