The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has rejected an opinion poll conducted by Global Info Analytics, which forecasts a victory for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming Akwatia by-election. The survey, released on August 28, placed the NDC’s candidate, Bernard Bediako, at 53% support, ahead of the NPP’s Solomon K. Asumadu, who garnered 47%.
The poll, which surveyed 2,050 voters across the constituency, suggested that the NDC holds a comfortable lead ahead of the September 2 election. However, the NPP’s National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, dismissed the findings during an appearance on Channel One’s Newsroom on Sunday, August 31.
Mustapha expressed confidence in the NPP’s prospects, stating, “There is no panic within our ranks due to the poll's results.” He further criticized the poll’s accuracy, adding, “Mussa Dankwah can conduct his polls for all we care. We are not here for a picnic; we are working.”
The NPP official also questioned the popularity of the NDC candidate within his own community, claiming that many constituents were dissatisfied with Bediako’s leadership. “Our candidate is more vibrant and engaged,” Mustapha claimed, noting that Bediako allegedly did not even communicate with his own father. “The people in his own community say he is disrespectful and snobbish, and they are ready to vote for the NPP.”
The Akwatia by-election, which has attracted national attention, is viewed as a competitive race, with both major political parties intensifying their campaigns in the constituency.
