Ghana Issues Travel Advisory Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

The Government of Ghana has advised its citizens to suspend all non-essential travel to and from the Middle East following a significant escalation in military hostilities involving Iran.

The travel advisory, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on Saturday, 28 February 2026, comes amid a deteriorating security situation in the region that poses potential risks to international aviation and maritime operations.

The development follows a joint military action by the United States and Israel against Iran, which has reportedly carried out retaliatory strikes targeting U.S. bases in the Middle East. Authorities warn that the volatile environment could result in sudden airspace closures, potentially leaving travellers stranded or exposed to active conflict zones.

Protection of Ghanaian Nationals Abroad

With thousands of Ghanaians residing in the Middle East—particularly in the Gulf States, Israel, and Lebanon—the government has urged citizens currently in the region to exercise heightened caution.

Nationals have been advised to avoid crowded public areas, military installations, and locations susceptible to protests or retaliatory attacks.

In an official statement, the Ministry noted that it is closely monitoring developments in the region and will continue to provide updates as the situation evolves. It further emphasized that all Ghanaian nationals should avoid non-essential travel to and from the Middle East until further notice.

Evacuation Preparedness and Emergency Measures

Government sources indicate that Ghana’s diplomatic missions across the region have been placed on high alert. The Ministry is updating its database of nationals in the most affected areas to facilitate a swift evacuation should the conflict escalate into a broader regional war.

Ghanaians currently in the Middle East are strongly advised to:

Register with the nearest Ghanaian Mission: Ensure that contact information is up to date at the nearest Embassy or Consulate.

Monitor credible news sources: Stay informed through reliable local and international media outlets.

Maintain regular communication: Keep mobile devices charged and inform family members in Ghana of their whereabouts.

Potential Economic and Diplomatic Implications

The escalating tensions and retaliatory actions are expected to have broader economic consequences, including potential impacts on global oil prices and international shipping routes—factors that could indirectly affect Ghana’s economy.

While Ghana maintains a longstanding policy of non-interference in international conflicts, the government has joined the international community in calling for maximum restraint among all parties involved.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaian nationals and will continue to monitor the situation closely, providing timely updates as necessary.
