Iran has officially appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader following the assassination of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a reported joint U.S.–Israeli operation that has intensified tensions across the Middle East.
The decision was announced on Sunday by Iran’s Assembly of Experts, which selected the 56-year-old cleric to guide the nation through one of its most serious political and security crises in nearly five decades. His appointment has received strong backing from senior political figures, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and the Iranian military.
President Masoud Pezeshkian described the transition as the beginning of a “new era of dignity and strength,” emphasizing the importance of national unity amid rising external threats.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also pledged unwavering commitment to protecting Iran’s sovereignty and advancing the goals of the Islamic Revolution.
