The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three individuals linked to the murder of Iddrisu Sumaila and a violent assault on Sambin Halidu, the newly elected chief of Tindorunga in the Tempane District.
According to an official police statement, officers from the regional command were deployed to Garu on May 26, 2026, to assist district police in apprehending suspects involved in the violent incident.
The suspects have been identified as Majeed Bawumya, 34; Milla Justice, 27; and Majeed Awudu, 20.
Authorities report that a search of Majeed Bawumya’s residence—also known as Atan Majeed—uncovered a BRUNI MOD 92 Cal. 8mmK pistol, multiple sharp weapons, GH₵600 in cash, and three mobile phones believed to be linked to the attack.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the unrest began after kingmakers from Worinyanga presented three candidates, including Sambin Halidu, to the Bawku overlord, Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azorka II, for consideration and potential enskinment as the chief of Tindorunga.
Police sources indicate that a rival faction opposed Halidu’s selection and allegedly issued threats to disrupt the ceremony, which had been scheduled for May 26, 2026.
Investigators believe that on May 25, suspect Majeed Bawumya and his accomplices—including one Alhassan Sabrina, who remains at large—held a planning meeting at Bawumya’s residence.
At approximately 3:00 a.m. on the day of the ceremony, the suspects reportedly stormed the home of Sambin Halidu and his family as preparations were underway. The attackers allegedly fired gunshots indiscriminately and set a Mitsubishi 4×4 vehicle (registration number GE 1115-13) on fire.
Several people sustained injuries during the assault. Iddrisu Sumaila, who suffered gunshot wounds, was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and have appealed to residents to remain calm and provide any information that could assist the case.
