Bernard Owusu, Chairman of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has issued a stark warning about the growing threat of illegal mining, also known as *galamsey*, in Ghana. Speaking at the International Workers’ Day celebration at Jackson’s Park in Koforidua, Owusu emphasized the urgent need for decisive action to tackle the destructive practice.
The event, which was attended by workers, union leaders, government officials, and former President John Dramani Mahama, served as a platform for Owusu to express his concerns. Despite efforts to curb illegal mining, he stressed that it remains a major issue that is causing severe environmental and economic damage.
Owusu highlighted the impact of *galamsey* on the environment, particularly the pollution and destruction of rivers, which in turn harms agriculture, businesses, and employment. This, he warned, could lead to even greater unemployment and hardship for everyday Ghanaians.
The TUC has once again called for stronger measures to fight illegal mining. According to Owusu, the fight against *galamsey* is crucial not only for the protection of the country’s natural resources but also for the future well-being of Ghanaian workers.
He urged the government to act quickly and decisively, stressing that the nation cannot afford to lose any more of its resources to illegal mining. Without immediate action, Ghana risks further environmental degradation and economic instability.
