"He Ran Out to Save One — Then Found 20 Dead: Herder's Livelihood Wiped Out in Seconds"

Tatale, Northern Region – A herdsman in the Tatale district of the Northern Region, Sarkin Amaru, is counting his losses after a thunderstorm reportedly killed more than 20 of his cattle in a single lightning strike on Monday, May 25.

The incident occurred during a heavy evening downpour accompanied by intense lightning and thunder. According to Mr. Amaru, he was inside his hut when the storm worsened.

Shortly after a deafening thunderclap, he saw one of his cattle collapse. Believing it to be an isolated incident, he rushed out to try and save the animal. But upon reaching it, he discovered a far more devastating scene — several other cattle were also falling to the ground simultaneously.

In total, more than 20 cattle died instantly from the strike, leaving the herdsman in shock and without his primary source of livelihood.

A Devastating Blow to a Family’s Survival

Speaking after the tragedy, Mr. Amaru described the loss as a major catastrophe for his family, noting that the cattle were his only means of income and support.

“I am appealing to the government, the district assembly, individuals, and organisations to come to my aid. Any amount will be appreciated,” he said.

He added that the loss has left him stranded and uncertain about how to continue providing for his household.

Community in Shock as Rare Disaster Strikes

Local community members have expressed deep sympathy for Mr. Amaru, describing the incident as both rare and devastating. While lightning strikes are not common in the area, they can sometimes cause mass animal deaths during severe storms, particularly when livestock gather in open spaces.

For now, Mr. Amaru is urgently calling for assistance — from both state and private entities — to help him recover from the disaster and rebuild his shattered livelihood.
