FIFA Set to Overhaul Yellow Card Rules for 2026 World Cup to Protect Star Players

FIFA Announces Major Change to Yellow Card Rules for 2026 World Cup

FIFA, the global governing body of football, is set to introduce a game-changing rule for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Reports indicate that FIFA plans to cancel all accumulated yellow cards after both the group stage and the quarter-finals. This means that players who accumulate yellow cards in earlier rounds of the tournament will not carry those bookings into the knockout stages.

The key goal of this new approach is to prevent star players from missing critical knockout matches, including the semi-finals and final, due to minor disciplinary offences in the earlier rounds.

Under the current system, players who accumulate two yellow cards across different matches face a one-match suspension. This has sometimes led to key players being sidelined for vital knockout games, even after reaching the latter stages of the tournament. FIFA’s adjustment aims to ensure the best players are available for the most important fixtures, boosting the tournament’s competitiveness and fairness.

FIFA believes this move will help reduce controversy, making the experience better for both teams and fans alike. The rule change is expected to be formally approved soon, with the new system set to be implemented during the 2026 tournament.

Under the new system, players can still be suspended during the group stages and early knockout rounds, but those bookings will not carry over into the later stages.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition to feature 48 teams, making it the largest tournament in FIFA history. With more teams and more matches, FIFA sees adjustments like these as necessary to maintain balance and excitement throughout the competition.
