Mahama Calls for Expanded Powers for Office of Special Prosecutor to Tackle Corruption

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his full support for granting the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) greater authority, particularly in the prosecution of corruption cases. Speaking at the International Workers’ Day event in Koforidua, Mahama emphasized that while the matter is still under legal review, it is crucial for the OSP to have the necessary powers to operate effectively.

Despite the ongoing court case, which includes deliberations at Ghana’s Supreme Court, Mahama believes the OSP should be sufficiently empowered to tackle corruption with full independence. He added that while certain legal aspects remain unresolved, there is clear room to strengthen the OSP’s capacity to do its job well.

The issue gained momentum after a recent ruling by the High Court of Ghana, which raised concerns over whether the OSP can prosecute cases on its own or if this power is reserved solely for the Attorney-General. This decision has sparked a challenge, with the matter now set to be decided by the Supreme Court.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor was established in 2017 with the mandate to investigate and prosecute corruption, especially among public officials. Designed to function independently, the OSP was created to shield itself from political interference. However, the current legal dispute is casting a shadow over its ability to effectively carry out its mission to combat corruption in the country.

Stay tuned for updates as the case continues to unfold and determine the future of the OSP’s powers.
