GTEC Arrests Nyarkotey University Officials for Operating Unaccredited Programmes

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has arrested the Director and Registrar of Nyarkotey University College of Holistic Medicine and Technology, located in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, for operating unaccredited academic programmes and an unapproved healthcare facility.

The arrests occurred on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, during a joint operation conducted by GTEC officials and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. Dr. Ademan Tetteh, a director and co-owner of the institution, was taken into custody alongside the university's registrar for further interrogation.

The enforcement action followed the institution's failure to provide credible evidence of accreditation for its academic programmes, as required by law. Two other directors of the university, Mr. Daniel Tetteh Boafo and Professor Nyarkotey Obu, were not present during the operation and are currently being sought by authorities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Dr. Tetteh was allegedly using an honorary doctorate title in a manner that has raised concerns regarding its authenticity and legality.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Jerry Sarfo, Director of Corporate Affairs at GTEC, emphasized the Commission's unwavering commitment to maintaining the standards of tertiary education in Ghana.

“We have continuously warned institutions to comply with regulatory standards. Unfortunately, some choose to disregard these directives. Today's operation highlights our dedication to protecting the integrity of the education sector,” Mr. Sarfo stated.

He further indicated that investigations are ongoing to assess the legitimacy of the university’s activities, including its use of academic titles. GTEC reaffirmed its mandate to ensure high-quality education and protect students from the risks posed by unaccredited institutions.

The suspects are currently assisting police with investigations. GTEC also advised the public to verify the accreditation status of any tertiary institution through official channels before seeking admission.
