Apple on Monday unveiled the iPhone 17e, a more affordable addition to its flagship smartphone lineup, as the company seeks to sustain momentum in iPhone sales and reinforce its position in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
Starting at $599, the iPhone 17e is priced $200 below the standard iPhone 17. While positioned as a budget-friendly alternative, the device retains the same processor as its higher-end counterpart. However, it features a slightly smaller display, a single rear camera instead of a dual-camera system, and omits the Dynamic Island interface used for app notifications and live updates. The phone is scheduled to launch on March 11.
Unlike its premium models, Apple has historically refreshed its lower-cost smartphones less frequently. The introduction of the iPhone 17e follows last year’s release of the iPhone 16e, signaling a shift toward more consistent updates in its entry-level offerings. The move suggests growing consumer demand for more affordable iPhones, particularly after a subdued market response to the iPhone Air.
The iPhone remains Apple’s most critical product, accounting for a significant share of revenue and serving as a cornerstone of investor confidence. In the fourth quarter of 2025, Apple exceeded Wall Street’s revenue expectations, largely driven by robust sales of the iPhone 17 lineup. The company reported record levels of device upgrades and double-digit growth among “switchers” — customers transitioning from Android devices to the iPhone ecosystem.
Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook described demand for the iPhone as “staggering” during the company’s January earnings call, underscoring the product’s continued strength amid intensifying competition in AI-enabled technology.
The iPhone 17e could further accelerate adoption of Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI-powered features, particularly among users with older devices that lack compatibility. By lowering the entry price, Apple may expand access to its AI ecosystem and encourage upgrades.

The launch comes during a challenging period for the broader smartphone industry, which is contending with an ongoing memory chip shortage driven by AI-related demand. The International Data Corporation estimates that the global smartphone market will decline 6.8% in the first quarter of the year.
Available in black, white, and pink, the iPhone 17e offers expanded storage compared with its predecessor and incorporates a new cellular modem that Apple says delivers twice the speed of the version used in the iPhone 16e.
Apple also announced an updated iPad Air, marking what is expected to be a pivotal year of product launches for the company.
