Arsenal’s Set-Piece Strength Edges Chelsea as Title Race Intensifies

Arsenal moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on Sunday, as Mikel Arteta’s side once again demonstrated their formidable prowess from set pieces.

All three goals came from corner kicks in a contest that offered little fluid attacking football. William Saliba gave Arsenal the lead in the 21st minute, rising highest to convert from close range. Chelsea were handed a reprieve in first-half stoppage time when a defensive mix-up resulted in an own goal, briefly restoring parity.

The decisive moment arrived in the 66th minute when Jurriën Timber powered home a header from another corner. Chelsea protested, alleging a foul in the buildup, but their appeals were dismissed. Matters worsened for the visitors soon after. Pedro Neto, already booked for dissent, received a second yellow card for hauling down Gabriel Martinelli to halt a counterattack, reducing Chelsea to 10 men.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Chelsea pressed late in the match. Alejandro Garnacho nearly fashioned an equalizer with a dangerous delivery that forced a sharp save from David Raya. A stoppage-time effort found the net, but the goal was disallowed for offside in the buildup, preserving Arsenal’s advantage.

The result maintains Arsenal’s cushion over defending champions Manchester City,   who had closed the gap to two points following their win at Leeds United a day earlier. While not a vintage performance, Arsenal delivered under pressure, reinforcing their credentials in a tense title race.

Chelsea’s ongoing disciplinary issues continue to undermine their campaign. Neto’s dismissal marked the club’s seventh red card of the league season, a statistic that has repeatedly proven costly. With crucial fixtures ahead, including a trip to Aston Villa, suspensions and lapses in discipline threaten their pursuit of a top-five finish and qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal’s dominance from corners has become a defining feature of their season. They have now matched the league record for goals scored from corners in a single campaign, underlining meticulous preparation and physical authority. As the run-in intensifies, such efficiency in decisive moments could prove pivotal in determining the destination of the title.
