Children’s Support Fund for Helicopter Crash Victims Surpasses GH¢10 Million

The Children’s Support Fund established to assist families affected by the August 6, 2025 Ghana Air Force helicopter crash has exceeded GH¢10 million in donations, according to an official statement.

Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, announced on Saturday, February 28, 2026, that total contributions have reached GH¢10,150,495.00 and US$20,000.00. The reported amount reflects donations received between October 17, 2025, and February 7, 2026.

The fund was launched by President John Dramani Mahama on August 15, 2025, during the state funeral for the eight victims of the tragic crash. Its primary objective is to provide long-term support for the education, healthcare, and general welfare of the children left behind by those who lost their lives.

The helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claiming the lives of several high-profile officials and others. Among the deceased were the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, along with six additional victims.

Since its inception, the fund has experienced steady growth. Initial contributions totaled approximately GH¢2.3 million in August 2025. By September, the amount had risen to over GH¢6.5 million, and by mid-October it had increased further to GH¢8.6 million. The latest figures indicate continued public and institutional support.

Recent donations have been received from a number of corporate and government entities, including Ghana Reinsurance, Kosmos Energy Ghana, Vitol Ghana Services Limited, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of the Interior, and staff of the Office of the President.
