The Detroit Lions have agreed to trade running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans, marking a notable shift in Detroit’s offensive plans ahead of the new league year.
According to multiple reports, Detroit will receive a fourth-round draft pick, offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, and a seventh-round selection from Houston in exchange for the veteran running back. While Montgomery recently denied reports suggesting he was seeking a departure from Detroit, the organization ultimately opted to move forward with the Texans’ offer.
Montgomery, 28, experienced a reduced role in the Lions’ offense during the 2025 season as emerging star Jahmyr Gibbs continued to establish himself as the team’s primary backfield option. Despite the shift in workload, Montgomery remained productive, finishing the season with 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. He also contributed in the passing game, recording 24 receptions for 192 yards.
Just last week at the NFL Scouting Combine, Lions General Manager Brad Holmes and Head Coach Dan Campbell publicly expressed their desire to retain Montgomery. However, Houston’s trade package appears to have prompted a reassessment. The addition of Scruggs strengthens Detroit’s offensive line depth, while the draft capital provides further flexibility as the franchise continues to build around its young core.

For Houston, the acquisition addresses a clear need in the backfield. Woody Marks led the Texans last season with 703 rushing yards, followed by Nick Chubb with 506. Joe Mixon missed the year due to injury, leaving the team without a consistent ground presence. Montgomery’s physical running style and experience are expected to bring stability and balance to Houston’s offense.
The trade cannot be finalized until the start of the new league year on March 11, but the agreement signals strategic intent from both organizations. Detroit appears committed to leaning further into Gibbs’ ascending role while reallocating resources to other areas of the roster. Meanwhile, Houston gains a proven veteran capable of immediately contributing to its rushing attack as it aims to strengthen its offensive identity heading into the 2026 season.
