A 30-year-old man, Dominic Ofori, popularly known as Fanta, has been sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court for his role in a violent robbery at a mining site in Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti South Region.
Ofori was convicted after pleading guilty to robbery, contrary to Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). His sentencing brings to a close a case that dates back to 2022, when he and three accomplices carried out a planned attack on miners operating in the area.
According to police reports, on March 20, 2022, the Manso Adubia District Police received intelligence that a group of armed men from Manso Abodom intended to raid a mining site at Manso Akwasiso to steal gold concentrate. Acting swiftly on the information, officers mounted a coordinated operation and laid an ambush at the targeted location.
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on the same day, four armed suspects arrived at the mining site and began firing indiscriminately before seizing quantities of gold concentrate from the miners. The police team stationed nearby intervened, leading to a gun battle between the suspects and law enforcement officers.
Three of the suspects—Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif, and Gideon Takyi—sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange. They were transported to St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital in Agroyesum but were pronounced dead on arrival.
Ofori, however, managed to escape from the scene and evaded arrest for several years. Following sustained investigations and intelligence-led operations, he was apprehended on February 16, 2026. He was subsequently arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court, where he admitted to the offence.
