Tornado Causes Significant Damage in Three Rivers, Michigan

A powerful storm system swept through parts of southwest Michigan on Friday afternoon, triggering multiple severe weather warnings and causing widespread damage in the city of Three Rivers. Authorities confirmed that the storm produced a tornado that tore through the area, damaging buildings, uprooting trees, and creating dangerous conditions for residents and businesses.

The severe weather prompted several warnings across Cass, St. Joseph, and Calhoun counties as meteorologists tracked the storm moving through the region. What was initially identified as a radar-indicated tornado was later confirmed by eyewitnesses who observed a funnel cloud accompanied by rotating debris in Three Rivers.

One of the most heavily affected locations was a Menards home improvement store, where strong winds ripped off a portion of the building’s roof. Shoppers inside the store experienced the frightening moment when the storm struck. Levi Stokes, who was shopping for electrical supplies with his 86-year-old grandmother, described the chaos that unfolded as people rushed for safety.

According to Stokes, customers suddenly began running toward the far end of the building as the winds intensified. Shopping carts were reportedly lifted and thrown through the air by the powerful gusts. Stokes said he focused on protecting his grandmother while the carts and debris flew around them.

Emergency management officials also reported damage at Three Rivers High School, although the full extent of the destruction is still being assessed. Local authorities are continuing to evaluate structural damage and determine whether repairs will be necessary before the facility can safely reopen.

The National Weather Service reported that a radar-indicated tornado was first detected near Three Rivers earlier in the day. Later reports from observers confirmed the presence of an actual tornado in the area. Another radar-indicated tornado was also reported near Union City shortly before 5 p.m., raising concerns about additional storm-related damage in surrounding communities.

Residents across the region sought shelter as the storm moved through. Michael Maurer said he was inside the Armor Physical Therapy building in Three Rivers with his son when the suspected tornado struck. Like many others in the area, they sheltered in place until the worst of the storm had passed.

Videos recorded by witnesses captured dramatic scenes of the tornado moving through the city, with swirling debris and strong winds clearly visible. These recordings have helped meteorologists and emergency officials better understand the storm’s intensity and impact.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and monitor conditions in the affected areas. The situation remains under review as crews work to clear debris and ensure the safety of local residents. Further updates are expected as emergency responders complete their evaluations.
